“I’m thinking this puts a hitch in our plans, cousin?”

The entire crew was now staring at the holoprojector on the table in the center Shadow Star observation lounge as the schematic showed the mass of police forces spreading out through Tophanavar’s main spaceport, along with the contingent of Alliance border forces, which had arrived mere minutes ago. The blue dots moved around the map, almost mechanical in their precision. Rati, who, with his lifemate, had joined the retinue soon after their episode with the Doctor clone, glanced at Xerx, who stood beside Paige, both their eyes fixated on the holographic display slowly rotating in front of them. Neither of them seemed pleased.

“Maybe not,” Xerx said, “but it’s gonna make things a lot dicier.”

“It’s lucky you’re in my company, then,” Paige said.

“Chatter on the public bands is giving some bullshit about a suspected outbreak of Columban Ebola,” Pip announced from her seat. “I’ve tapped the military bands, but they’re silent. Like they know someone might be listening.”

“The nosey one is right,” Rinkya said. “They’re using a quarantine as an excuse to keep the place locked down.”

Alexa gave a snort. “Columban Ebola, though? That shit would rip through a colony’s environmental systems as soon as they opened the doors.”

“Any orbital colony with decon protocols that wouldn’t prevent an outbreak in a spaceport ought to be shut down,” Paige chimed in with a look of disgust. “You’d think they would have been a bit more creative than that. C.E. is nasty but there’s easy treatment for it these days.”

Xerx rubbed his chin. Pip was right; this was indeed bullshit. It was standard procedure for ship medics to submit logs of any treatments for infections upon arrival, and any ship carrying a potential pandemic was immediately quarantined in orbit. Orbital colony guidelines about this were doubly stringent for obvious reasons.

At that moment, the entrance doors parted, and Sarah sauntered in carrying a plate of reconstituted sushi in her hand, cheeks full of the food she had already been scarfing down on her way back. She paused and eyed the two Felyan officers as if for the first time, then swallowed the mass of food in her mouth in a manner that would have been severely uncomfortable for any other human, if not deadly.

“Hey,” she said to Rati. “Why exactly aren’t you out there with them?”

“We’re off-duty,” Rinkya said, answering for her lifemate, who fixed the woman with a look of immediate dislike and suspicion.

“And the ones involved now aren’t just any blues; they’re enforcers.” Rati was unable to keep the lack of courtesy out of his voice. “Like SWAT units in the Colonies. We’re not called for grunt work like that.”

“We get the info; they go for the glory,” Rinkya concluded. “So the brass doesn’t know we’ve been helping you.”

“I see. So bad news for you if they found out, then.” Sarah gave the pair a sly look and grinned baring her fangs. “Not that I would say anything, of course.”

“No, you wouldn’t.” Alexa’s voice cut through the room, matched with a “don’t you fucking dare” expression.
